Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Establish specifications and test procedures
   • Product quality specifications and required outcomes are read, drawings are interpreted and test parameters are identified
   • Test methods for each required test parameter are identified and most efficient test method is noted
   • Requirements for testing by personnel external to work area are identified and appropriate permission is obtained
   • Sampling, inspection and testing are conducted in accordance with hazardous substances regulations
2. Select evidence
   • Appropriate conforming and/or non-conforming products, materials and/or waste are selected for testing
   • Observations of operators and copies of procedures are collected
3. Conduct and interpret tests
   • Tests are conducted in accordance with workplace procedures, including quality assurance procedures, and results are documented as required
   • Emergency procedures are identified and implemented in an incident
   • Comparisons of all data collected are made
   • Recommendations are noted and considered for feasibility
   • Equipment is maintained in accordance with workplace and manufacturer requirements
4. Report findings
   • Findings of tests are documented in accordance with workplace procedures
   • Potential or existing problems and appropriate recommendations are proposed and reported verbally and/or in writing

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures completing relevant documentation identifying and using relevant equipment, processes and procedures implementing contingency plans interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments monitoring work activities in terms of planned schedule operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and reporting and/or rectifying identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

housekeeping standards and procedures operational work systems, equipment or management, site and organisational operating procedures quality standards and test/inspection criteria for products concerned relevant regulations, codes of practice and Australian Standards relevant WHS/OHS procedures and guidelines safety data sheets (SDSs)/material safety data sheets (MSDSs), manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures typical sampling/testing problems that may arise in work operations and products, and related options for action and solutions workplace or site layout workplace quality assurance principles and procedures workplace quality procedures for sampling, inspection and testing products.
